The First Friday Breakfast Club (FFBC) is an educational, non-profit corporation for gay men in Iowa who gather on the first Friday of every month to provide mutual support, to be educated on community affairs, and to further educate community opinion leaders with more positive images of gay men. It is the largest breakfast club in the state of Iowa. The club provides a safe and supportive environment for its members, and the membership list is kept confidential. Help is also available for those who need assistance in the "coming out" process. Activities of the First Friday Breakfast Club The club raises money for a scholarship fund and awards a yearly grant to an Iowa high school senior who has contributed to reducing the degree of homophobia in his/her school and/or community. Letters are sent to every high school counselor in Iowa to solicit scholarship candidates. Club members receive the monthly newsletter, First Friday News and Views. The newsletter contains editorials, club and community announcements, articles of interest to the membership, reviews, and profiles of one of the club's members. Other club activities have included a Fourth of July Picnic, participation in the GLRC Gay and Lesbian Expo, guided tours of The Principal Financial Group's art collection, and attending theatrical productions together. Mission Statement The First Friday Breakfast Club, Inc.'s, primary purposes are to work toward the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against all people based on their disclosed or perceived gender orientation. The First Friday Breakfast Club will seek to achieve these purposes through education directed at the public, and by providing its current and prospective members with a forum for discussion, organization and dissemination of informational and educational materials designed to further its purposes. About the four-leaf clover in our logo In 1620, Sir John Melton wrote: "If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing." As time has gone along, the four leaves of the
clover have also taken on further meanings: And so, for ourselves, our friends, and our community, we wish for all four as our lives progress. |
